We are looking for 8 choreographers in the Birmingham metropolitan area to create a new choreographic work that showcases how they are inspired by Sloss Furnaces Historic Landmark. Choreographers will present works in progress in May where the audience will vote on their favorite work of choreography that will be presented in our September 2025 show at Sloss Furnaces. All styles are encouraged to apply!
The work in progress showing will take place on May 30th and 31st. All 8 selected choreographers will present 3 minute works in progress.
Our audience selected choreographers will present their expanded work at our final show on September 13th, 2025 at Sloss Furnaces Historic Landmark.
Choreographers will receive payment for this show and payment for any future performances of their work until 2027.
Choreographers will select dancers from our open call audition on March 1st and may select no more than 9 dancers for their work.
Gradient Dance Theater and Community strives to make dance accessible to all bodies, styles, ages and genders. A successful candidate is open to adapting their style to create an inclusive environment for the dancers.

Applicants must live in the Birmingham Alabama metropolitan area
Applicants must be over the age of 18 or be prepared to have guardian consent
Applicants must be able to work periodically with dancers in person between March 2025 and May 31, 2025 at Gradient Dance’s Studio or The Dance Foundation
Applicants should submit a maximum 5 minute video of the type of movement they aim to present and how it brings their inspiration from Sloss to life.
Applicants will need to briefly describe what they intend to create with their choreography and how the Sloss Furnaces Historic Landmark inspired them. This can be anything from the history of the site, how it impacted Birmingham, or the architecture.
Applicants should complete a new work.
